Reading experts know that two factors determine whether students are likely to read a book, variety and proximity. It is estimated that a classroom library should have approximately 2500 books of a wide variety from which students can choose, and the closer students are physically to these books, the better no matter how amazing the school or local library are. Being limited physically, mentally, and emotionally by their socio-economic status, I want to break those boundaries by providing the world for my students through the power of reading. Expanding my classroom library to include deliberately selected books from the "Who Was (Is)" and "Where Is" series will be the start of those experiences. With these books, I can create class projects such as literature circles and presentations where students can explore some of the wondrous places of our world and find inspiration in the life stories of diverse people with whom they can connect and relate.
