My school serves approximately 500 students in grades 6 - 12 and is located in the South Bronx. My students are predominately minority, and come from high-poverty backgrounds. Our school was recently authorized to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) world school and will being offering the IB Diploma program beginning next year. Currently I teach twenty-eight 11th-grade students who are planning on enrolling in the IB Design Technology course next year, and taking the summative IB exams at the end of the course. My students are inquisitive learners, very curious about the world around them. In my engineering class they have been designing and building projects out of paper and cardboard. They have done very well using these limited materials, building full-size stools and table dividers. However, they are eager to begin working with materials such as wood, plastic, and metal. We are working to acquire equipment that will allow us to offer them this capacity.
