Most of my students are English learners, whose primary home language is usually Spanish. Few families have any books at home, and many parents didn't finish school in their home countries. However, my kids have amazing strength and resilience. Many come from broken homes and lower socio-economic urban areas, and ride a long way on the bus each day. Yet they still participate in athletics, music, and other extra-curricular activities. In a word, my kids are hungry. They're hungry for attention, for affection, for a reason to change. They don't just need a teacher, they need a leader. The above picture is from a bookswap I organized at our library. I want to teach them what reading is, and what it does. I want them to embrace humanity and thirst for learning through literature. Reading saved my life, and I believe it can save theirs.
