I currently work at a Title 1 school located in a low income neighborhood of Los Angeles. My students live in extreme poverty stricken conditions, and a lot of my students need a lot of extra help when it comes to math. Common Core is pushing them in directions they're not ready for, yet it is important we keep trying to bridge that gap for them. My school lacks the basic resources our students need to feel comfortable and confident in the math classroom, and therefore many students come to my room at the beginning of the year with then mentality that they can't succeed in math. I make it my priority to prove them wrong, build up their confidence, and show them that math is something they can master with the right practice, patience, and tools. We have grade level Common Core books for our classrooms, but no other math tools needed to develop skills. Therefore, they don't know how to use calculators, protractors, compasses, or other math tools needed for success. At the beginning of each year, I like to run a unit of work on learning how to use our math tools. Unfortunately, at my school this year, we have none of those tools on campus.
