The majority of my students are English Language Learners. They are extremely bright and have a curiosity about the world that I would never expect were I to take conversations in the teachers' cafeteria at face value. I cannot count the number of times I have heard complaints of, "Why can't they be like my kids" or "the parents don't care." These comments of course completely fail to acknowledge the fact that their parents work nearly 18 hours a day to make certain that their family maintains a roof above their head. All of these forces are compounded for my students because they have all been diagnosed with disabilities. Ranging with diagnoses from processing deficits, to autism, and deficits in attention, my students(more often than not) are the undeserving recipients of this contempt. And yet, for many of them, the desire to learn and discover has not been diminished. They understand that their disability puts them at a certain disadvantage, yet they strive.
