My students are high school seniors taking an elective English class called African-American Literature. Because it is an elective, these are students who are choosing to study issues of race, American history, identity, and culture. They are a wide range of ability levels and come from very diverse backgrounds. They live in an urban environment and attend a very large, diverse school where the issues they are studying are applicable to their everyday lives and to their futures.
