My students are mostly rural poor, with 67% of all students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. The school is also poor, spending only $11,000 per pupil, more than $5,000 less than the average spending per pupil in the state of Vermont. The school only provides about $250.00 per teacher, per year, for classroom supplies, so furniture and storage are impossible to get without the help of grants. The students see this and it impacts their morale, self-esteem, and overall performance in academics. Research confirms this phenomenon. The American Federation of Teachers commissioned a report as part of No Child Left Behind that concluded that “poor environments in schools...adversely influence health, performance, and attendance of students.” This included eyesores like “graffiti” and other damage or disrepair of facilities. Creating the learning environment my students want and deserve will improve their overall well-being and academic performance.
