My students attend a special public school in New Jersey run by the county for children and youth with autism and multiple disabilities. Their ages range from 3 to 21. These are the students who need help beyond that a regular public school can give. Many have disabilities that make it difficult for them to perform what you and I might consider routine tasks, but they try very hard to do them. Despite their challenges, they want to do what every child wants to do. In music class, they enjoy listening to music, but they also want to make music on their own. Some have limited motor skills, and standard classroom instruments are very hard for them to handle. They are familiar with buttons and switches from other communication devices they use, so finding instruments they can play in the same way allows them to participate with the other students in the class.
