Many of out students have never planted a seed. They have never watched a plant grow. One of the projects we do is to plant lima bean seeds and see if they sprout. When the seeds do sprout, the students are fascinated by the fact they have planted a seed and watched it turn into a plant! Hands-on activities such as handling seeds and soil is critical to engaging students in the learning process - when the process results in a new plant - the learning process is amazingly successful! The reason we would like to obtain a growing rack and humidity tent, is to provide us with the space to grow plants from seeds, and to ensure the greatest success with the growing process. Ultimately, we would like to enable the students to grow herbs and vegetables that they can take home, or sell at a local farmer's market. The ultimate goal would be to take the success of this growing rack and move to larger scale of an on campus greenhouse.
