My students come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from Latin America, the U.S. to southeast Asia. They all come from low socio-economic backgrounds, but are supported extremely well by a loving and close-knit, family-oriented community in California. Our school is K-8 with teachers that loop with students for two years at a time, allowing us the opportunity to really familiarize ourselves with student families. We are very fortunate to have a school that emphasizes learning through authentic opportunities and enhancing our curriculum with art and music integration. However, our resources do not allow our students the kind of access to technology, music and art that they need to become creative and technologically savvy, life long learners. Simply reading a book, or writing a story cannot provide the depth of understanding, or allow students to demonstrate an internalization of information that creating and recording songs or short skits of shared experiences can.
