Through the centuries, dating all the way back to Plato, it has been clear that including the arts is integral to great education. First and foremost, the arts give students and avenue into their creativity that is not reached through typical math and ELA lessons. This creativity has been linked to academic achievements in many studies. Here in Room 6 we will be doing a series of art projects designed to specifically focus on watercolor and oil pastel technique. The watercolor unit will be made up of three lessons and we will be using the watercolor sets and the watercolor paper. The first lesson will focus on the two main techniques for applying watercolor paint (wet on dry and wet on wet). We will then move to color mixing for the second lesson with a focus on maintaining the sets for future use. The watercolor unit will close with a lesson on blending and shading (now your seeing why we need all that watercolor paper). We will then use our newfound skills to crate a visual aesthetic to compliment two different ELA projects (a book report and a character analysis) and a math project (Ratios). The students will be able to take the basic techniques and construct through their own creativity.
