My students will be divided into groups of 4 to 5 within each computer lab class. Each group at different computer lab times will have the opportunity to fulfill a STEM challenge. The challenge will include the following: each group will use the Legos Mindstorm robot kit to build one of several different kinds of robots. They will have to build this robot with several different kinds of pieces including attaching a programmable motor. Once built, students will have to code/program the robot to fulfill tasks which complete a challenge given to them by the Computer Lab teacher. The robot kit project will help the students understand coding/programming concepts, and, in turn, will allow them to work on problem-solving, reasoning, and collaboration skills. Students will be engaged in a process they will think is fun, but the truth is, they will be learning how to solve complicated problems with the support of team members while persevering through to project completion. This is as good as it gets to inspiring future technology experts!
