Our classroom is a supportive environment that embraces immersion in reading, approaching learning by engaging with books that interest us rather than a "one-size-fits-all" solution. As part of an urban magnet school program, my diverse group of 7th grade students come from all around the Indianapolis district with more than 90% below the poverty line. Many of my students find their sense of home and community within our classroom. Their use of writing and independent reading is often therapeutic during a tumultuous period of their lives, the dreaded middle years. Time to stop. To breathe. To reflect.
