Helping prepare students for success in school and life is tough. It is even tougher when working with students who have unimaginable worries outside of the classroom. Every bit of help in engaging these students and helping them succeed can make a world of difference. I work in a rural school on a native American reservation in North Dakota. The school serves about 175 students who come from varying backgrounds and live very different lives. The vast majority of students, however, come from lower income families where completing homework and getting good grades are (at times) the least of their worries. Despite the less-than-ideal home lives some of these students live, they come to school every day and try their hardest.
