As my young musicians work to improve their English language skills, I am teaching them that music is also a language which we can learn to read and write. While the majority of our music instruction happens in large groups, composition tends to be a more personalized and individualized concept. Our school uses a web-based music textbook which allows us to download various apps to tablets for individual student exploration and practice, enabling students to more quickly and thoroughly master the concepts taught. Students will use this iPad to compose their own music--most for the first time ever! They can then experiment with their original melodies by putting instrument sounds together in different combinations in order to create the perfect orchestration for their composition.
