Students are so used to reading contemporary novels and books (most of which have to do with archetypes like vampires, werewolves, wizards, or false Greek and Roman god characters). I want my students to be exposed to the literature that this country was built on. Classic literature strengthened my love of reading, and I know it will do the same for this generation of kids. I still remember what an impact books like Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Scarlet Letter, and The Odyssey had on me at a young age. Those books made me appreciate reading and the authors who wrote them. I feel that students will gain a deeper grasp of what literature really is if they are exposed to classic books.
