We need multiple copies of a high-interest book that our students feel they can identify with. The characters in this true story come from a background that matches with the demographics of our school. The characters in the story come to the U.S. as immigrants, and live in impoverished conditions. Despite this, the story follows a journey of great achievement. Students need these books as part of a whole-class reading. Previously, students haven't had their own copies, but providing them with their own would do wonders for their interest and engagement in reading. This is a resource that they are able to take home with them to, helping students read at home just as they do at school. Not only does this help motivate reading engagement, but engaged reading is the beginning of the process of teaching reading skills that will prove vital to their education in the coming years, and beyond.
