My Computer Science students will be working with our Chemistry and AP Environmental Science (APES) students to understand the quality of our own environment. We have many students who also have allergies, and we have many families that are committed to all natural lifestyles. As such, it is important to know what is going on around us where we live. This understanding can then be extended to our state, nation, and world! We have many families who use Tom's of Maine's products, and it would be a fantastic hook for them to understand why using healthy products are important.
Understanding what contaminants are in our own environment is the first step to understanding why making changes for a cleaner environment is important! The computer science students will have an opportunity to code the sensors for the raspberry pi's and create the sensor kits. The computer science students will then work with the chem and APES students to use the kits around our school and city. Since the raspberry pi sensor kits are mobile, they are not limited to just the classroom. Finally, all classes will be able to evaluate the data. This cross-curricular project will allow students to consider their roles in the world, and how they might become agents of global change. Working with Tom's of Maine will help our students make that become a reality!
