One of the most important tools we have in science is models. Models help us visualize and make sense of the concepts that are too difficult to see. Much of the science I teach to my 7th and 8th grade students operates on imperceptibly small scales or, quite literally, astronomical scales. In order to better understand abstract concepts like evolution and the vastness of space this upcoming semester, my students need to be able to make these ideas concrete. Your donation will help my students interact with scientific concepts in a meaningful way and push them to develop deeper and more cognitively rigorous questions as they learn. Being able to visualize and manipulate what they're studying is going to be crucial for their success. The Orbiter and Motorized Solar System will help my 8th grade astronomy students better understand the relative scales and distances of the planets to each other and to the Sun, while the Space Measurement Lab will help reinforce these ideas. The natural selection game and experiment will help my 7th grade science students better grasp the time scale of evolution, while the Classroom River Kit will bring a deeper meaning to how we interact with the environment around us and allow students to connect with our community. Lastly, new composition notebooks will allow all my students to stay organized and synthesize all the new learning ahead of them this spring!
