The FIRST Tech Challenge is an excellent way of teaching students engineering and programming principles that will serve them well in STEM-centered careers. The materials being requested will give my students hands-on experience, which is so much more than talking about it in class or having them read about it in a textbook. The purpose of our robotics program is to give students a chance to experience first hand STEM-related projects that many of them would not be able to do otherwise. We have many disadvantaged students that would not be able to join a private team or to build these kind of robots at home. Also, we will use the competition robot built by these students to promote robotics at our school, particularly to students who perhaps may not fit the stereotypical mold of those interested in STEM.
