The idea of giving students a prepared review sheet is a valuable tool, but more powerful is giving the students the ability and restriction of creating their own review/study/cheat sheet. By allowing only a notecard - this forces students to focus on the most important topics that they haven't memorized fully, and they don't overwhelm themselves with information and review more of their notes and work. As a teacher for 10 years, I realize how many incoming high school students do not have this basic study skill developed and find its a necessary skill to teach to my algebra 1 students.
