The best way I can think to take this to the next level is to help institute a game library in our classroom. We work hard in the classroom, and we deserve to give these kids some positive breaks and down time. The direct benefits of adding a board and card game library to these students' classrooms is going to benefit them both academically and physically. Academically, they will be motivated to keep up with their school work in order to participate with their peers. The most important effect will be physically, as they will be able to interact with each other and relieve some of the stress and pressure the world has created for their little brains. These kids have suffered trauma the last 2 years, and things like purposeful structured play are a great addition to the school day. Establishing a game library will be useful in many ways. Indoor recess will become a much more anticipated occasion with many new options for kids to experience with their peers. Having a game library in my classroom will allow these kids an awesome opportunity to interact with their classmates in a productive way. These games will provide our students with amazing opportunities to grow, and a way to share their growth with other students. Studies have shown that playing games in the classroom can help students pay attention, increase participation among students, and provide a great source of motivation. Their problem solving skills also increase, as well as their attentiveness to details and processes. These board games and card games don’t just serve as entertainment. The playing cards, dominos and Yahtzee can be great manipulative math tools, as well as a competitive game. Learning to follow the rules is very important.
