Middle school is notorious for being an incredibly difficult time for students. Combining the change of schools with the overwhelmingly high transient and homeless population only compounds the inevitably difficult time that the teenagers in Fresno Unified experience year after year. My hope for this project is to use flexible seating to create a place that has the students excited to come to school day after day and to provide a sense of stability. More than 1400 students in Fresno Unified are considered homeless and an even larger number of students are living in temporary housing, moving regularly, causing continuous instability. This project is more than just being able to provide a fun and stimulating atmosphere for the students through furniture options; it is the ability to provide them a home that is most important. While there is abundant research showing flexible seating yields an increase in test scores, this project is important for me so I can build a family with the 125+ students I'll encounter year after year.
