Our 6th grade students in this rural Pennsylvania community struggle with uncertainty and answer it with eagerness. They come from disparate home lives, from families struggling with grinding poverty or an ever-shrinking job market. Some have great gifts; some have very limited abilities; they are white, black, Indian, Hispanic and Asian; they are children. For many, Science is one of the only hands-on activities they have in their day. Their natural curiosity is still there, but it slowly ebbs against the forces that push these students through long hours of scripted reading and mathematics classes. They enjoy experiments and activities in which they actively learn and test themselves while testing some basic science questions. They learn to work together and to make sense of the world around them.
