Our student demographic is Florida urban high-poverty ~90% free and reduced lunch, ~80% Hispanic (primarily 1st and 2nd generation immigrant). During my 5 years tenure at the school, we have made substantial gains in student retention, increased attendance to well over 92% of students in attendance on a daily basis (to a goal of 95%+ this year). Additionally, we have focused on community outreach by aligning with local businesses and in becoming a community resource for students and parents alike. Many students are unable to afford basic supplies, such as pencils and paper, which we provide for them. Most often, the topics that we discuss and the hands-on experiences that we provide them in the science classroom are the first such experiences that they have ever had, which is the primary reason for the marine aquarium. The students are in observing, caring-for, and measuring quantitatively the interdependence of a micro environment the issues on a "big-picture" macro level.
