Our school has a high student population of free and reduced students. Many of them don't have the luxury of owning their own pieces of technology. I would love to introduce my students to more hands-on learning with the use of 3D printed materials. Many of my students will never leave the state to explore historical monuments, cities, or regions of the United States.
With the use of a 3D printer, my social studies students will be able print maps of cities, artifacts from Ancient Rome and Greece, temples from the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, and create their own castle floor plans. Students will be able to learn by touching and manipulating 3D printed learning materials. They will be able to see and touch monuments from around the country. Students will work in groups to create functioning catapults when exploring Ancient Europe.
Students are going to be able to spend more time involved in hands on learning with the use of the 3D printer, and printer filament, and step away from the 2D diagrams and photos in the book. Not only will be more engaged, they will also be preparing themselves for the future. My students will learn useful design skills that will be necessary for future jobs with the advancement of technology.
