My English classes have recently finished reading two novels, Stargirl and Holes. The students have been excited and engaged when reading together as a class. I've been modeling fluency by reading aloud to students as they follow along then respond to comprehension questions through discourse. Because we are a Title I school, (students are at-risk and come from impoverished homes) many of the students' access to exciting books are limited. In fact, the books left available to us as class sets are dated and students would struggle to relate or make connections with the characters from those books. My fear is that students will lose out on an opportunity to learn new words and worlds through fiction and non-fiction books.
But my hope is that our class will continue to build their literacy skills with your help. We have had conversations about what book we'd like to read next as a class, and many mentioned Harry Potter to spark imagination and creativity, Love Stargirl to continue on our last series, and A Long Walk to Water to inspire perseverance inside and outside of the classroom. I believe that this would help my students build their literacy skills, get more excited about reading, and would also encourage them to explore the following books in the Harry Potter series and more.
