My students typically come from middle-class areas with supportive families, but lack the connection between a passionate life and the work they do on a regular basis in high school. One thing that all of my students can identify with is a desire to become "something". Unfortunately, for many of them, this "something" is sometimes difficult to define, leaving many of them feeling like their work in the classroom is preparation for tasks they may never be faced with in the "real world". By not helping my students make connections between their lives and passions now with their lives and passions of the future, I feel that I am not preparing them as best I can to be successful and happy adults. My school is supportive of helping students realize and reach their potential, but funds for extra books can be a hardship. I am turning to the DonorsChoose.org community to help my students access a text I cannot afford on my own, but one that I know my students would benefit greatly from.
