Recently, our school's Leadership Class conducted a survey where they asked students to name an elective class or club they would like to see in our school. Approximately, 75% of the students answered Robotics or Gaming. It's a fact that by offering classes students enjoy, students are more likely to stay in school and get a degree in a course they took as an elective. Since I teach mathematics and an intervention class, I want to bring robotics and programming into my classroom. I want to incorporate robotics into my intervention class. The Lego Mindstorm EV3 robots will facilitate the understanding of mathematics in the real world. Students will understand how mathematics is used in our daily lives. Students will have the opportunity to develop 21st century skills such as collaboration, technology literacy, oral communication, written communication, critical thinking, and problem solving. These skills will give my students the necessary tools needed in order to succeed in their education. Students will be working in pairs together to program the EV3 robots. Students will be practicing their problems solving skills by requiring to collaborate with each other. For many of these students, robotics might be the beginning of a profession. Programming a robot requires the use of mathematics. Students will have the opportunity to use their mathematical learning by playing and programming robots. The learned lessons so far include speed, distance, velocity, conversions, and friction.
