Students in my class are creating children's stories inspired by Beowulf, the epic narrative poem. They are creating characters, settings, and conflicts which are related to the original story. At the same time, they are working on modernizing elements of the story and focusing on a simple, transferable lesson for young children. The children's books will be created by students from start to finish, extracting lessons and characters from Beowulf and modernizing them for our modern society. They will begin by brainstorming morals or lessons which might be learned from Beowulf. Then, they will move on to select characters which can be changed into child-friendly animals or people. Next, they will establish settings and plan their stories using storyboards. These storyboards will lay out the plan for the children's books, including what images and text will appear on each page or two-page spread. When the students are ready, they will transfer their work onto the blank books, carefully checking their spelling and grammar as they go. Books will be displayed in our school library, and possibly shared with a nearby elementary school. Publishing these stories will give my students a great sense of accomplishment as they see their work shared with the class, school, and local communities. They will make connections between a story as old as Beowulf and their world today.
