Choices Reading is a core academic class that meets for 4.5 hours per section each week. There are three sections of 33 students in the reading program for a total of 99 fifth grade students. 95% of the students in my program are African American and 5% are White or of Hispanic descent. The majority of my students are of low socioeconomic status and from urban areas. Over 85% qualify for free and reduced lunch. The majority of my students come to me from the Albany City School District and lack foundational skills in reading, especially in the areas of comprehension and vocabulary development. Therefore, my class which is aligned to the New York State Common Core Standards for English Language Arts, targets these areas and helps them to become more proficient readers and writers. Through increased exposure to texts & more time spent reading and writing, my students get to where they need to be & reach success!
