In a science classroom my students expect to go to the lab as much as possible. Having fun in the lab is a must but being safe and staying clean is a priority. You can never be to prepared when working in a science lab and you can almost guarantee that things will get messy. Since my classes rotate every 45 minutes, the lab needs to be clean, ready, and inviting all day long. After every lab my students understand that they must clean up after themselves in a safe manner.
My students enjoy learning in a clean and inviting classroom! Students appreciate coming to a safe and clean environment. Some of the items needed include a large trash can that can moved across the lab safely to dispose of biological wastes and hazardous materials. Students need paper towels to be able to wipe their stations clean after labs such as DNA extractions and dissection labs. Due to possible biological exposure it is always a good idea that our students have access to Band Aids so that they can protect their open wounds from contamination. To change things up in the classroom I often allow students to make notes or do their work on the surface of their desks using Dry Erase Markers. This can leave student's desks stained with ink and tedious to get off. I have found that using Magic Erasers work amazingly at removing stAlong with learning classroom content our students will also learn good hygienic habits for life. Learning is just that much better when you are safe and have an enjoyable environment to do work in.
