My students are all from the inner city. We are in Southern California . They fall behind in every aspect of social ,economic and academic standards. The families they come from are immigrants who work hard to keep a roof over their heads. Most of my students are citizens,but of low socio-economic status. At school, they are in a world where the outside issues are forgotten for a few hours. Our school does its best to provide a safe haven of positive,safe, and enriched culture of learning. In the classroom, I engage them and allow them to open up using rigorous lessons. I try to show each of them their uniqueness as learners. They are critical thinkers who can be challenged to do what they think they can't do. Most in the classroom have discovered this for themselves. Resources are lacking, but willpower isn't. Day by day, I ask them to share one new thing they've learned in school. Not to my surprise, they all can come up with at least one thing.
