We're a special education Day Treatment program in western Maine. My classroom currently has students from grade 2 through grade 5, all who have behavioral and emotional challenges. Unlike traditional schools, students may spend several years in the same classroom. There are some great benefits to having kids for multiple years, but there are also some major challenges, one of which is keeping kids excited and engaged. The first time a student makes a flashlight from a popsicle stick they are generally very excited. By the time they've done it three times the novelty has worn off. I am always struggling to keep things new and interesting in an effort to create lifetime learners.
