My project is to work to create a self-sufficient wood shop. I'm working with a small budget and I want to provide students as many opportunities in the wood working realm to build both skills as a woodworker and skills that will benefit students as members of society. Not only do we build projects in wood shop...we build people. I look to develop a "Homeowners Carpenter Class" where students learn basics about construction to do simple home repairs and home improvements. Additionally, I look to build projects that benefit local businesses to create an avenue for community members to see the benefits of a school wood shop. If we complete projects that benefit the community, the community will see our classroom as a benefit to the school.
These products will be used to compliment and replace tools to increase safety for my students in the wood shop. I have spent time identifying tools that can be replaced to increase safety for my students while giving them full access to tools in our shop. I have also chosen tools to help maintain a clean work environment. Cleanliness = Safety.
I look to work my donations up to a Sawstop Table Saw. The Sawstop will replace our old table saw to give a peace-of-mind to myself as an instructor and other stakeholders in our shop. My students are trained to use a table saw properly, however, when a more safe option is available, why is it not in my high school wood shop? I am working to provide my students the most safe and productive work environment possible.
