My students are a fantastic group of 5th graders who often struggle with housing needs and food security (my school is at 100% free and reduced price lunch). Many of the families of our students do not always provide a safe or constructive environment so school is more of a haven than an obligation. We also have many attendance issues in our school as well. Some students may miss up to 30-40% a year. It's up to us as educators to figure out how to get them engaged enough to want to come.
