My students mostly come from low-income families. Some live in motels; others, cars. They come from broken homes, or homes where both parents work off-hours. Many students are lacking the essential support at home. Many are first or second generation immigrants and are still working to understand and navigate the culture of school, as well as overcome language barriers. But overwhelmingly so, these students are kind. They are considerate, well-meaning high school kids who need extra help and love. The school they attend has a rough reputation. But those of us who are intimately involved know that is not the whole story. There are plenty of students here working hard to break those stereotypes.
