My students are representative of their community and California. Some were raised within miles of our school while others have traveled 12,000 miles to live nearby. They all have a strong desire to learn and assert themselves in positive ways outside of their community. Our school is a small public school with an enrollment of 420 students. Our students are Latino, African-American, Asian, and Pacific Islander; however, there is much diversity even within these ethnicities. Our Latino population is from the United States, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala; our Asian students from Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and China; our Pacific-Islanders from Tonga, Samoa, and the Philippines. Our population is truly diverse and bring with them their own experience, assumptions, and cultural assets. With their diversity of experiences comes the need for a creative unifying experience enabling them to equitably compete in a creative but tech-driven environment.
