The mountains form the breathtaking backdrop to our town, yet few of our students every have the opportunity to embrace them. 72% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and 24% of the residents of our county live below the poverty line, placing us among the poorest 5 counties statewide. So although skiing is a quintessential part of our state's culture and economy, and although many students in more middling or affluent economic circumstances take this activity for granted, it is wildly out of reach for many of the families in our district. Our students deserve to experience the joys of the mountains as much as any other student in the state. Although our local resort offers student lift tickets for $20, less than a quarter of their typical rate, this modest price is still out of reach for many of our students. One student brought me a jar of coins totaling $16.40, hoping he could make it to one of the trips eventually (of course I covered his difference). This is an opportunity for a donor to create an overwhelming amount of joy for a comparatively modest cost, getting a lot of proverbial bang for the buck. What do students learn from a day of skiing? Beyond the incomparable joy of a good day in the mountains and what constitutes a rare break in monotonous routine, students have a tremendous opportunity to grow through their participation in ski club. The activity reaches a demographic of students that otherwise is unlikely to participate in sports, providing an opportunity to link physical wellness and activity with a sport that has the potential to be lifelong.
