This school-year marks my fourth as Spanish teacher in a high-needs school in Brooklyn, New York. Our student population is 40% Euro-Asian, 40% African American, and 20% Latino. As the only Spanish teacher, I instruct over 300 students yearly, implementing a variety of proven strategies for World Language instruction. My method is known as TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Learners need to hear and/or read words/phrases many, many times (50 to 150) in a compelling, contextualized and comprehensible way in order to internalize them to a point where they are actually able to USE them. A typical class consists of students reading a novel in Spanish as a large group and in pairs, as determined by the teacher. There is a lot of questioning and repetition, and laughter - it is fun to use the language in creative ways! The results have been incredible and I am a firm believer that TPRS works!
