An eco-column is a student constructed, self sustaining ecosystem which provides months of data collection and curriculum connections and enrichment for AP Environmental Science. An eco-column is constructed in stages and includes a terrestrial chamber with soil and terrestrial plants, a decomposition chamber which includes decomposing organic matter and detritovores such as worms and also a lower aquatic chamber which includes aquatic plants as well as a snail and/or fish. Throughout the entire lab process students make observations and also collect data in regards to pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient levels (nitrogen and phosphorus) in both soil and water. This allows students to get a hand on experience into what they are currently studying.
