The students I will teach this fall will be the first students of my teaching career. They also remind me of myself: first-generation, inner-city, immigrant families, English learners, low-income, and residents of Westlake and Pico-Union Los Angeles. Many will also be new to the country because of the push factors beyond their control in their home countries. With my experience working with immigrant and refugee youth and teaching during a global pandemic, I hope to inspire these students to learn and achieve what some may feel is impossible. Since applying to college, my goal has been to elevate the next generations of scholars of inner-city Los Angeles and work for my community. My students will need a classroom that will not only make them feel safe, secure, and supported but also one that is conducive to learning. I hope you can help me help them, and I am immensely grateful for this teaching opportunity.
