The students are engaged in a unit based on the concept of Utopia. As teachers we feel it is imperative our students read a wide variety of literature to help clarify their thinking on this seemingly innocent concept. While we have several short articles, poems and essays dealing with this subject, we are lacking longer texts such as novels and novellas. On the surface, the concept of Utopia appears to most students as an obviously inviting, idyllic existence. The hope is, upon further examination, the students will be able to draw conclusions and infer that the concept of a Utopian society is not necessarily conducive to human thought and behavior. The end goal for student learning is through discussion, writing, listening, and research, they will be able to think critically and analyze ideas and concepts of a Utopian society.
