I teach inner-city kids and over 85% of them qualify for free or reduced cost lunch. They have come to my school because they have an interest in Engineering and/or Design. We get most of our equipment through grants and general funding for Career & Technical Education but those funds are to be used for very specific career-related activities. Right now we have a big focus on Robotics and a strong program, but we are trying to grow other STEM initiatives. My students are hard workers who have come to learn more than just a trade but a set of skills to help them eventually end up with a meaningful career. They often do not have to basic things that students need in the 21st century like a home computer or Internet access, but many of them stay after school just to use computers to get their work done. Our students love doing community outreach, sharing their projects and learning with students from other schools. They enjoy mentoring students in younger grades whenever possible.
