What a unique and amazing experience for the Urban student to put down their pencils and create using a foreign medium. Lets preserve History! By purchasing Batik equipment, my students can have an authentic experience in textile design and get a true sense of fabric art from around the world. I feel that it is important to provide experiences for my students that are engaging and unfamiliar. I want learning to be unique, impactful and significant.
Although the initial investment of Batik equipment is costly, most of the tools are re-usable and long lasting. These materials will provide years of productive teaching for many classes. I am also excited to be able to recycle broken and unwanted crayons by melting them and reusing them for this process. As an Art Educator with NO BUDGET for supplies, finding ways to repurpose what I currently have is really important.
My students will create their own symbolism within the wax and fabric. They will cut and dye their own fabric. We will walk in the shoes of the traditional Indonesian Artists. This process opens up a dialog about history, culture and our own traditions. Please help my classroom experience Batik!
