My co-worker and I teach approximately 130 6th grade students who love to create and design. The standards for science in 6th grade require that the students study plant cells, human cells, and other microscopic organisms. The students enjoy getting up to go outside and do experiments. They enjoy being involved in groups. They show a better depth of understanding by first hand experiments rather than just a video. As great as our video technology has become, nothing can change how much the students learn from actually doing an investigation. Their school is 6 years old, but the school has undergone drastic changes with the economic stress. Buying new books and equipment with recent budget cuts has lead to the students only having access to old supplies. Their love for learning science is vast at this age. They can read and soak up so much. They are still an impressionable group of kids that enjoy learning.
