My students are 2nd Graders in one of the poorest communities with one of the highest rates of violence in America. These children are heroes. They come to school every day facing circumstances that break my heart. Despite the trauma of violence that permeates the neighborhood, my students walk into our classroom ready to learn and hungry for books. We have worked hard to create a rich reading culture school-wide. In 2nd Grade, three quarters of the students read below grade level and there are not enough books at their level to give them the opportunities to read that they both need and deserve. Please help me to change this.
