Students often believe that all machines produce much more work than their human operators put in. This view is consistent with their experiences of most powered mechanical devices such as chainsaws, electric power tools and hydraulic excavators. Students’ everyday are exposed to different devices like levers, inclined planes, wedges and pulleys as being types of ‘simple machines’. Although most students will have common experiences of the use of simple machines like levers and pulleys, few will have any understanding that most complex machines are made out of simple machines . Many students also have difficulty in identifying or explaining these experiences to others and rarely identify parts of the human body, such as the arms or legs, as composed of levers. The basic purpose for which most simple machines are designed is to reduce the effort (force) required to perform a simple task. The Jumbo Simple Machine Builder will help my students learn the basic function of simple machines mentioned above. As they progress in their understanding the engineering concept behind simple machines building, they will be able to team and independently work to build more complex machines. The machine builders set give the students the hands-on activity they love, while they build real-working dolly, functioning pulley system and much more. In addition students will be able design and construct different contraction to explore motion, weight, gravity and much more. The most important objective of these lessons is to open a door of possibilities for my English Language Learners students to learn and understand the concept through hands on meaningful activities that goes beyond their language limitations.
