As we synergize to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year, we are working to build learning units based on our new state science standards. The standards are driving our unit topics and we are integrating literature and information texts to teach the reading standards and build knowledge about the science phenomenon. We have chosen complex texts that will be used with multiple reading strategies such as shared reading and interactive read alouds. All the texts reflect our state's Read to Be Ready initiative in which we are striving to have 75% of all 3rd graders reading on grade level by 2025. These texts were carefully chosen to build knowledge about patterns with celestial bodies in the solar system and the structure and function of plants and their parts. A plant lesson will include reading about plants as well as applying that information with dissecting plants. We will also investigate colored water as it moved up the stem of a plant into its flower.
