The furniture I am requesting will give my students a "home" in the school. As a social and emotional interventionist and new to my position, I need to have a soothing space that students can feel safe in, able to calm down, and be open minded. My school's current furniture does not facilitate that environment well at all. Middle schools tend to have more rigid furniture when the students still want and need soft surfaces. My vision is students come to my room for a check-in, a break, a place to regulate themselves, and once they've done so, go back to class. The large pillows and bean bag chairs provide comfortable seating so the students can come in and flop down, just like at home. They can get comfortable on the floor while we participate in mindfulness breathing or simple stretches. The cart will allow me to travel to different classrooms with my supplies. I can conduct mindfulness lessons, mini-yoga sessions, SEL reflections with my own supplies and easily transport all that is needed with a cart. By providing this safe, comfortable space, my students will learn about themselves, how to regulate emotions, manage conflict, and navigate their personal journeys through middle school. All while have a space that they know is comfortable, safe, and non judgement.
